Dr Xin Yu, Senior Lecturer at The University of Queensland, is advancing artificial intelligence (AI) for social good—delivering innovations in healthcare, communication, and sports science that make a real-world impact.

In healthcare, Dr Yu develops AI algorithms for portable retinal imaging devices, enabling affordable, accurate, and timely detection of eye diseases in rural and remote communities—helping to prevent avoidable vision loss. In communication, he leads Australia’s first large-scale Auslan (Australian Sign Language) translation initiative, creating interactive datasets and learning tools that are breaking down barriers for the Deaf community and have earned global recognition, including the Google Inclusion Research Award. In sports science, he has pioneered AI-powered human movement analysis methods capable of assessing athletes with limb deficiencies for the first time—transforming rehabilitation, enhancing performance, and opening new opportunities for Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

Through his research and outreach, Dr Yu is driving the next generation of AI innovation—building technologies that are inclusive, accessible, and transformative for communities.
