Dr Ruirui Qiao

Dr Ruirui Qiao, Group Leader at The University of Queensland, is tackling one of science and engineering’s biggest frontiers: creating materials and systems that can interact intelligently with the human body and the environment. Today’s technologies, from medical devices to robotics are often built from rigid, passive materials that struggle to integrate with complex biological systems.

Dr Qiao leads pioneering research into liquid metal and magnetic nanoparticle–based smart materials that can sense, move, and transform. These programmable materials respond to stimuli such as heat or magnetic fields, enabling lifelike motion and adaptive functionality. Her team applies these breakthroughs to develop technologies for tissue repair, targeted drug delivery, and bio-integrated robotics.

More recently, she has extended her work to biodegradable soft materials that support environmental sustainability. Alongside her scientific achievements, Dr Qiao is also committed to inspiring the next generation through STEM outreach and international innovation challenges.
