Dr. Ashokkumar (Ashok) Manoharan’s work tackles the persistent and often overlooked barriers faced by people with cognitive disabilities (PwCD) and migrant employees in securing meaningful employment—both in Australia and internationally. While diversity is a common talking point in corporate agendas, his research reveals that genuine inclusion remains rare, representing a missed opportunity to build more innovative, equitable, and high-performing workplaces.
Focusing on practical, evidence-based solutions, Dr. Manoharan’s research promotes inclusive hiring practices, particularly within the hospitality sector. He has led a multidisciplinary project to develop a toolkit that supports the sustainable employment of individuals with intellectual disabilities in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This work was carried out in collaboration with industry bodies, including Clubs SA and the Australian Hotels Association, and culminated in events, presentations, and strategic partnerships that sparked strong industry engagement and policy interest.
As co-investigator, Dr. Manoharan also helped create the Disability Employment Action Toolkit—a resource designed to raise awareness about disability and embed inclusive hiring strategies. Successfully implemented in leading hospitality firms, the toolkit introduced innovative practices that directly contributed to the employment of PwCD.
Beyond research outputs, Dr. Manoharan has amplified impact through networking events, industry forums, and school outreach programs, engaging hundreds of participants. His work has attracted media coverage and influenced both regional and national conversations on inclusive employment. Through sustained collaboration and advocacy, his research is driving real-world change—shaping industry practices and reframing the narrative around diversity and inclusion.
