Young Tall Poppy Science Awards
Celebrating a New Era of Excellence: The 2026 Young Tall Poppy Science Awards
Since 1998, the Australian Institute of Policy and Science (AIPS) has been on a mission to celebrate the "best and brightest" of Australia’s scientific community. Created to honour the legacy of our nation’s greatest achievers, the Young Tall Poppy Science Awards have recognized over 1,000 early-career researchers who don’t just excel in the lab but lead in the community.
As we enter 2026, the world is changing, and so are we. We believe that scientific brilliance takes many forms and thrives in many different environments. To ensure we are recognising the full breadth of Australian innovation, we are expanding.
What’s New for 2026?
This year, we are proud to introduce three distinct award categories, allowing us to shine a brighter light on excellence in academia, industry, and First Nations leadership.
-
Young Tall Poppy Science Award: Our flagship award for early-career researchers across all scientific disciplines who excel within their research and also their science communication.
-
First Nations Young Tall Poppy Science Award: Honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers who demonstrate excellence in scientific achievement and science communication, and who show leadership that inspires communities and strengthens Australia’s research landscape.
-
Industry Young Tall Poppy Science Award: Recognising outstanding industry‑based scientists who drive innovation and impact while excelling in science communication that brings research to life for broader society.
A New Way to Celebrate: The Tall Poppy Science Summit
We aren’t just adding categories; we are reimagining the entire Young Tall Poppy experience. This year marks the debut of the Tall Poppy Science Summit - a premiere gathering designed to transform how our winners connect and grow.
Instead of a standalone state-based ceremony, winners will now participate in an immersive national summit featuring:
-
Advanced Professional Development: Tailored sessions to sharpen leadership and communication skills.
-
Strategic Networking: Exclusive opportunities to connect with Young Tall Poppies from all across Australia.
-
The Gala Celebration: After a day of growth and connection, we will come together to celebrate achievements in style.
